MAY I take this opportunity to stress the importance of feeding wild birds in our gardens.
At this time of year, food and water offered in your garden on a regular basis is a lifeline to our feathered friends. In severe weather, I suggest feeding twice daily, in the morning and in the early afternoon.
Birds require foods high in energy and fat during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the cold and frosty nights.
Always adjust the quantity given to the demand, and never allow uneaten foods to accumulate around the feeders, as this will attract rats and mice.
Once you have established a routine, it is important not to change it as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your garden accordingly.
Feeding products and equipment can be found in local shops and supermarkets at a minimal price, and can provide hours of entertainment as well as ensuring your local bird population is kept suitably fed.
May I take a final opportunity to thank readers for their kind support and generosity during 2010, and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and prosperous new year.
