A STEWARD who has notched up 30 years at a York working men’s club has been presented with a bronze figure of a racehorse to mark his long service.
John Winspear, of Holgate Working Men’s Club, is thought to be York’s longest-serving club steward.
Mr Winspear, who has family links with the Holgate club, said: “My father worked in this club prior to me. He left in 1980, so I applied for the job.
“Holgate WMC was always very busy until the carriageworks closed down. We haven’t got a big membership now, but we’re still going.”
A racing enthusiast, Mr Winspear said he was very pleased with his bronze figure. He said: “I’d like to thank the committee and all the members that collected for the bronze. I do like racing. There are quite a lot of fans in the club. We watch it on television and we’ve owned race horses. At the moment we have one with the local stables.”
