DOES City of York Council really care about recycling? Two weeks ago they were unable to collect due to weather conditions. We accepted that, but then our glass and paper collections were not emptied again.
A genuine mistake perhaps? So we rang the helpline expecting them to send a vehicle round, but we were told they never come out for missed collections and “just put it all in the landfill bin”.
We find this attitude appalling. We try to do our bit for recycling and always pay our council tax on time but we will have had to wait six weeks between collections or use landfill. Why do we bother at all when the council have this attitude? We asked to speak to a manager but were told no one was available.

Geoff Derham, head of waste and cleaning services at City of York Council, said:
“We decided to concentrate on collecting landfill waste, and from November 29 we suspended all garden waste collections.
“During poor weather conditions resources are stretched, so residents are asked to store their recycling material and we will collect it when conditions allow.
“We apologise if any customers have experienced an unsatisfactory service. If residents have no space to store material they could take it to a household waste site. But, if residents say they can’t do this and that they will put it in their landfill bin – advisors will point out the implications of this.”
