ANGELA HALL was the worthy winner of the Women’s Club Championship trophy when Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers held their annual Christmas party and presentation evening.
Lorraine Hiles was in second place and Nicola Booth third in a closely contested competition.
Hiles and Booth both finished on the same number of points but the former prevailed as runner-up after getting the better of all the head-to-head challenges.
Rob Burn had an excellent year, which saw him win the Men’s Championship – a few points ahead of Stephan Tomaszewski, who was similarly ahead of Richard Hall.
Paul Atkinson, a relatively new acquisition for the club, having won the Norman Smith trophy at last year’s Thirsk 10 Road Race for the first unattached finisher in the YO7 postcode area, was awarded the trophy for the most improved man, while Hiles was designated the most improved female member over the year. Steve Booth won the Endeavour Trophy, having shown great improvements in his times over the year, but also spending many hours dealing with time trial results for club handicaps.
Several members were due to take part in the Loftus Poultry Run last Sunday, but the race had to be cancelled following heavy snow – the fourth race in consecutive weekends to be cancelled because of the weather.
With the ground predictably frozen solid, Noel Clough and Pete Wilkin found the going slippery for the latest Yorkshire Points race at Thornes Park, Wakefield, and Clough finished a third in the seniors’ race, leaving him second overall in the standings. Wilkin was the first V50 finisher and has already won the series for that age group, having gained maximum points throughout.
