TRIBUTES have been paid to Nell Welburn, one of Selby’s oldest residents, who has died aged 98.
Nell formerly worked on the counter at Selby head post office and was also in her younger days a leader with the Congregational Girl Guides.
Until she was taken ill a few weeks ago, she was a regular member of the congregation at the Selby United Reformed Church, and had planned to attend a church dinner on December 5, but was in hospital when the event took place.
Church secretary, Elder John Hodge, said: “Nell was a regular at the church playing a very active part in church affairs and attended the 200th anniversary last year.”
A former pupil at the then Selby Girls High School, now Selby High School, she was the eldest former pupil to attend the school’s centenary reunion in 2008 at the age of 96.
Her funeral took place at Selby United Reformed Church, followed by internment at Selby Cemetery.
