Sleeve: Front sleeve is functional, the discount checkout artwork devaluing the package, but don’t always judge a CD by its cover.
Sleevenotes: Bob Mehr contributes four-page essay and a selection of vintage photos proves that someone cares about Dixie Chicks’ heritage.
Content: Never really a “singles” band, so instead their country albums are represented over 30 tracks in distinct album chapters. Crossover appeal has not travelled well to the UK, making this is a specialist collection.
High point: Rick Rubin-produced tracks from Taking The Long Way won the Chicks three Grammy awards. Not Ready To Make Nice in particular is their calling card.
Low point: Whereas fans like Dixie Chicks’ pure country sound, others simply won’t get it.
Any glaring omissions? No.
Anything new? Not officially, but as the Dixie Chicks are an unknown secret for many, there is much to discover.
Cheerful or tearful excuse for release? Tremendous way to investigate a passionate and melodic band.
Where might this end up at Christmas? Serious music fans with an appreciation of country and folk will treasure this.
