YORK Samaritans have received a significant increase in calls during November and December – mainly due to the cold weather.

Snow and ice on footpaths and roads have left many elderly and disabled people unable to leave their homes, even to undertake the shortest of journeys.

Paul Moran, of York Samaritans, said: “A lot of people have been feeling isolated and cut off, especially elderly and disabled individuals.

“Some people that have been unable to go outside have had no human contact for weeks. The Samaritans provides that human contact.”

Mr Moran went on to praise the dedication of volunteers at the York branch.

He said: “Some people have made amazing efforts to come into work. There’s one lady who lives near the edge of the Dales. People are really determined to be here and answer the phones because Christmas and New Year are very difficult times for many people.”
