AN ARMY of police officers is to patrol York’s streets this week as revellers are warned not to let excessive drinking lead to crime.
Superintendent Lisa Winward, of North Yorkshire Police, said extra police would act as a visible deterrent to trouble and help those who want to enjoy a night to do it safely.
She said the idea was not to prevent people having fun, but to ensure revellers were kept safe and considering the needs of others.
Police are warning people not to leave drinks unattended and are asking friends to look out for each other during drinking sessions.
Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick said: “By all means go out and enjoy yourself over the festive period but please be aware that drinking to excess carries dangers which people often don’t stop to think about.
“The dangers of having one too many can have a profound effect on your own life or the life of someone else. Drinking too much can make people act out of character, but that one moment of madness can change your or another person’s life forever.”
Mr Madgwick said the festive period often saw a rise in sex offences against women who may have had too much to drink or have had their drinks spiked.
He warned women that they could be more susceptible to sexual assaults if they drank too much and become unaware of their surroundings.
He said: “It is important for women to be careful about how much they are drinking on a night out. Be alert to who is around you and look out for your friends, especially if they have had too much to drink.
“Keep an eye on your drink and don’t leave it unattended. Don’t go home alone – make transport arrangements before you go out and don’t leave anyone behind.”
