TRANSPORT bosses have agreed to set up a 20mph zone on a road outside a York school with the aim of boosting pupil safety.
The new speed limit will be introduced in Heworth Road, near Heworth Primary School, while markings which ban drivers from leaving their cars outside the school gates will also be brought in.
The move by City of York Council follows concerns from parents about the speed and volume of traffic and “inconsiderate parking”. North Yorkshire Police objected to the 20mph zone on the grounds it could not enforce it and did not think motorists would obey it, but the proposals were backed by the school and local councillors Tina Funnell and Ruth Potter, as well as Fishergate councillor Andy D’Agorne. The keep-clear markings will mean cars will not be allowed to stop outside the school from 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
