THE North Yorkshire-born boss of a railway firm has been described as “irreplaceable” by his family following his death at the age of 81.

Chartered accountant Peter Dodson, who was originally from Steeton, near Tadcaster, spent almost his entire working life at Taylor Bros in the Derbyshire town of Sandiacre, where he rose to become managing director.

The company, now Balfour Beatty, made switches and crossings for the rail industry, with a workforce of more than 400, but Mr Dodson retired at 57 following heart problems, after more than 30 years’ service.

He died at Royal Derby Hospital on December 13 and is survived by his widow Nancy, three children and three grandchildren. His funeral was being held today.

“The memorable moments and achievements of Peter’s life are far too numerous to mention,” said Mrs Dodson.

“He had a full and happy life with few regrets and no major plans unfulfilled.”

His son, Philip, said: “He was well-respected and left his mark.

“He was a proud Yorkshireman, the salt of the earth with a heart of gold.”
