A COPMANTHORPE brother and sister won the two races for children at the Millennium Bridge races on the banks of the Ouse in York this week.

Ten-year-old Lauren Bird, who attends Copmanthorpe Primary School and is a member of Nestl Rowntree Athletics Club, was the overall winner in the Under-11 mile race, which had 38 runners. She came home 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Her main event as a club athlete is the 600 metres.

Her elder brother Oliver, a pupil at Tadcaster Grammar School, won the Under-13 race.

Their father Paul took part in the men's race.

The junior races cover 2.5 kilometres.

The races are now in their fifth year and have become an established part of the York running calendar.

The race heaquarters were at st George's Field and the event was organised jointly by Nestl Rowntree Athletics Club and York Acorn Running Club and are sponsored by Nestl Rowntree with additional support from Sweatshop and Brooks.
