WHO even knew Greg Allman was still around? Yet here he is, sharing two attributes with Robert Plant: improbable rock-star hair for a man of 63 and a producer in the shape of T Bone Burnett.
If the songs aren’t quite up to scratch with Plant, this remains an impressive return, a heartfelt homage to the blues that inspired Allman and his brother, Duane, in their youth long before the days of The Allman Brothers. At times swampy and at times R&B rolling, Low Country Blues is mostly a full-proofed spirited delight, with highlights including opener Floating Bridge, Skip James’ Devil Got My Woman, Muddy Waters’s I Can’t Be Satisfied and Samuel Maghett’s My Love Is Your Love. Not to forget Please Accept My Love, by BB King, who inspired the Allman boys way back when they were teenagers.
