A LEADING figure in a global technology company has told students computer science can help solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.
Dr Graham Spittle, chief technology officer and vice-president, software group Europe, for IBM, officially opened the University of York’s new department of computer science yesterday.
He toured the £21 million complex, part of the university’s £750 million campus expansion at Heslington East, and told students the opening coincided with IBM’s 100th anniversary. He said: “At this time, we too are firmly focused on the role that computer science can play in addressing major global issues: food availability, water supply and distribution, energy supply and security, city congestion and environmental modelling.
“Through this investment, and by partnering effectively with business in its research and development, the new facility will be fundamental in developing the future skills and expertise required to address these challenges.”
