PARKING problems have led to residents in York holding talks to try and find a solution.
The discussions, organised by Keith Aspden, who is standing for re-election for the Fulford ward for the Liberal Democrats at next month’s local elections, arose because of concerns about student parking in the Heslington Lane and Heath Moor Drive area.
Among the suggestions raised by the group of Fulford residents were introducing schemes to encourage “considerate parking” and asking the University of York to reserve more spaces at its campus to reduce pressure on nearby residential roads.
Consultation on a residents’ parking scheme, single yellow lines and a reduction or freeze in university parking charges have also been put forward as options.
Mr Aspden said: “The recent installation of double-yellow lines along University Road and Heslington Lane is a welcome move, but we need the university and the council to work together to come up with a long-term solution. The suggestions made by residents are a step forward, but what we really need is action from the university.”
He said he would pass the suggestions to council officers before the issue is raised at the next meeting of the University Community Forum.
