A CAMPAIGN by councillors in York to secure double-glazing for council tenants has paid off.
The replacement windows are to be fitted to City of York Council-owned properties in the Heworth ward, with work due to start in 2012 as part of a wider programme.
Homes in Byland Avenue, Kirkham Avenue, Middleham Avenue, Roche Avenue, Bell Farm Avenue, Friar’s Walk, Lilling Avenue, Monkton Road and The Crossway will all be part of the scheme, as well as properties along part of Huntington Road.
The project will also focus on houses in Elmfield Avenue, Foston Grove, Healey Grove, Thornfield Avenue and Barfield Road.
Barbara Boyce, who campaigned for the move when she successfully stood as a Labour candidate in the 2009 Heworth by-election and is one of the party’s three runners in the ward at next month’s local elections, said: “This is great news after getting so many names on a petition supporting the call for double-glazing.
“The campaign was about the council’s responsibility to provide decent quality housing which retains the heat residents are paying for through their energy bills. As things stand, the energy efficiency of the properties is pretty poor, which is costing tenants money they can ill-afford. I’m pleased Heworth appears early on in the council’s programme for replacement windows, as we have campaigned vigorously to get residents what we feel they deserve.”
Fellow Labour candidate for Heworth Tina Funnell said: “The current climate with public funds is looking pretty dire, so I’m pleased Heworth’s council housing is to receive this attention.”
