NEW machines aimed at making it easier for residents to borrow books are set to be installed at a York library.
The self-service system is being introduced at Tang Hall Library ahead of a revamp which will see it become the city’s newest Explore centre, following a template used at York’s main library and in Acomb.
Nigel Ayre, City of York Council’s executive member for leisure, culture and social inclusion and the Liberal Democrat candidate for Heworth Without, said: “It’s clear from libraries where self-service machines are in use that staff have enjoyed being able to get out from behind the desk and interact with visitors.
“This will allow them to work more closely with the public, helping them choose books, work with children and support learning.” The Lib Dems plan to install the machines at every library this year.
Osbaldwick candidate Jonathan Morley, whose ward is also served by Tang Hall library, said: “I’m really pleased that, at a time when other councils are dramatically cutting library services, we are investing in making improvements to ours.”
