A NATIONAL award ceremony shortlist has recognised what many have long suspected – North Yorkshire has some of the best streets in Britain.

Popular places in York, Harrogate, Skipton and Robin Hood’s Bay have been shortlisted in the Google Street View Awards to highlight Britain’s best loved streets.

The bustling scenes of Low and High Petergate in York and Skipton High Street have both been shortlisted for Britain’s best shopping street.

Meanwhile, the picturesque New Road in Robin Hood’s Bay, and Montpellier Hill, in Harrogate, have been nominated in the Britain’s most romantic street category.

Voting opens online today and the winning streets will be announced next month.

Kay Hyde, of Visit York, said: “This is fantastic news for York. We believe no other city has such a fabulous range of unique shops so perfectly intertwined with magnificent attractions and stunning architecture, making shopping in York an experience in itself. “Petergate, part of the newly branded Minster Quarter in York, is home to an eclectic mix of designer shops and fabulous eateries and all just a stone’s throw from the beautiful York Minster.”

York triumphed in the Google Street View Awards last year when Shambles was officially crowned Britain’s most picturesque street, beating Royal Crescent in Bath and Grey Street in Newcastle.

This year’s shortlist was created by judges including television presenter Sarah Beeny, journalist Dawn Porter and David Else, the lead author of The Lonely Planet guide to Great Britain.

Petergate in York and Skipton High Street have been nominated in a list of 20 locations, including the fashionable Gardner Street in Brighton, which are all recognised as having “a broad range of shopping options”.

The streets in Harrogate and Robin Hood’s Bay have been shortlisted in a list of 20 streets deemd to be romantic, including The Mall in London and The Royal Mile in Edinburgh. New Quay Road in Whitby has also been shortlisted in the third category for Britain’s hippest street, alongside Call Lane in Leeds.
