The Laybourne Lakes complex bounced back from the sad events of last winter in some style in the York Amalgamation Early Spring match.

The harsh winter caused a major fish kill but, despite high winds lashing the Hessay complex, the top ten rods in Sunday’s contest on Marley Lake put more than 300lb of fish on the scales.

Winner John Miller chose to tackle the tempest by opting for running lines tactics at peg three.

Casting a small bomb and pellet tight to the far-bank he netted an impressive 74lb 9oz of carp to 4lb.

One angler who took full advantage of a tail wind was Pete Webster. Drawn on peg 16 on the east bank, he fished pole and pellet to the gap in the islands for a mixed bag of 71lb.

Tony Stevenson and Tony Davies were the other prize winners with 39lb 6oz and 32lb 4oz respectively.

High winds caused problems with presentation at Langwith Lakes too, but Ray Marklew still managed to put an excellent 94lb 14oz on the scales after offering pellet across to the island at peg 19 on Emma’s Lake.

Ray found carp to 3lb as did runner-up Gary Thornton at peg 20 on the same water, where he found the near margins the most productive returning 67lb 4oz.

Result: 1 Ray Marklew, Garbolino Ossett, 94-14; 2 Gary Thornton, Langwith, 67-4; 3 Roger Holmes, Langwith, 59-12; 4 Chris Watson, Ackworth, 58-1; 5 Graham Twohey, Garbolino Elton, 58-0; 6 Andy Marritt, N Frodingham, 52-13; 7 Julian Griffin, Hull DAA, 49-10; 8 Mal Bailey, Garbolino Elton, 49-7.

The Monday open at Tollerton Ponds produced a great result with the top two both breaking the 100lb barrier.

Jason Orwin led from peg 34 on Coot with a level 113lb.

Fishing corn and meat down the edge, he netted carp to 7lb.

Top weight on Kingfisher went to Dick Morley, who continued his excellent run at the fishery with 106lb 8oz.

Drawn on peg 12, he made use of a vacant peg 13 to fish down the edge with pellet for a mixed net of carp to 6lb.

Others: Gary Moore, Tollerton, 91-8; Kevin Orwin, Wakefield, 86-0; Andy Hattee, Acomb Tackle, 82-0; George Grundy, Tollerton, 62-0; Dave Cheetham, Tollerton, 57-0; George Wishart, York Tackle, 55-0.

Carpvale also came up with the goods despite the weather and Stuart Wilson stole the show from peg 12 on Cyprio.

Offering worm and caster at 16 metres, he targeted the gap between the two islands for a superb mixed net of carp, bream and skimmers weighing 115lb 8oz.

John Fletcher fell a fish short of three-figures at Cyprio 17, where he took 24 carp on meat at 14 metres.

Organiser Andy Gallant filled third spot from peg 15 where worm at ten metres brought him an all-carp net of 88lb 6oz.

Others: Dave Wright 77-6; Keith Larkin 77-4.
