AS SIDE projects to their pop career, the Pet Shop Boys made their theatrical debut with the musical Closer To Heaven in 2001, and later scored a soundtrack for the classic silent movie Battleship Potemkin.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s latest project is their first full-length ballet, The Most Incredible Thing, created for former Royal Ballet principal Ivan Putrov to dance at Sadler’s Wells. The ballet is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fable, in which a king announces that whoever invents the most incredible thing will win the hand of his daughter and half of his kingdom.
This is the perfect foil for individual showcase dances and introductions to several colourful characters. To fully appreciate the complex combination of electronica and contemporary classical music, orchestrated by Sven Helbig, you probably have to experience Javier De Frutos’s full choreography.
However, The Most Incredible Thing is another milestone in the PSB’s enduring and intriguing resumé.
