THE dust is settling on an incredible day of local election drama in York, with rival parties celebrating and commiserating.
Thanks to everybody who followed us through Twitter and on our website today, and don't miss The Press on Saturday for more reaction and pictures plus a full rundown of results.
To close out the day, here's what some of the key election figures had to say:
Labour leader James Alexander:
"Today has been a fantastic result for Labour and shows we are back in York and also in our other great northern cities.
"The people of York deserve better and that is what we are now going to deliver."
Labour deputy leader and Acomb councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing:
"It's been an absolutely fantastic day. The result is unbelievable and shows the people of York truly believe in what we have to say and have put their faith in us."
Former council leader Andrew Waller:
"I have enjoyed being council leader and it has had its moments - going straight into a recession and two of the harshest winters on record as well as reductions in public expenditure the like of which we have never seen before.
"There are some difficult decisions ahead, but as one door closes, another opens."
Bishopthorpe councillor John Galvin:
"It was a long wait for the results to come through, and I feel very frustrated for all the people at the York count because I believe it was unacceptable for us to be held up by the regional count in Wakefield.
"But I'm absolutely delighted with the result and I will continue to do my best to represent the people of Bishopthorpe and Acaster Malbis. I consider it a great honour."
