A FLOCK of birdies soared high in the Catalan sky for York-born golf ace Simon Dyson.

The world number 84 got his Spanish Open campaign back under par on a scintillating second day at the Real Golf de El Prat course in Barcelona.

Stuck in the doldrums after a first round 75 to leave him way down the leaderboard, Dyson started yesterday’s second round on the tenth hole – a route that was to instantly lead to Spanish booty.

In an otherwise untroubled front nine, he racked up birdies with shots to the good bagged on the tenth, 13th, 17th and 18th holes.

His only blemish arrived on the first with his lone bogey of the day. But that was quickly wiped out when picking up a shot on the fourth and then Dyson notched his sixth birdie of the round on the par-three eighth for a five-under-par 67 – one of the best rounds of the day.

The rousing recovery put Dyson into the top 25 and four shots off the lead ahead of today’s third round.

John Parry, of Harrogate GC, crashed out with a second-round five-over 78.
