CARR Junior and New Earswick shared the mixed York Primary Schools Tag Rugby League Trophy after a fantastic finals day at Huntington Stadium.
Thirty-two schools took part in the heats throughout March, and this was whittled down to nine for the grand finale, which was played prior to York City Knights’ Co-operative Championship game with Dewsbury on Sunday.
The standard of rugby on show was top quality, with the competition getting better each year.
The format saw three groups of three with the top team in each group plus the best runner-up, qualify for the semi-finals.
Those to make it through were Carr Junior, Sutton-on the-Forest, New Earswick and Scarcroft, with Carr and New Earswick winning their respective last-four clashes.
The superb final was end to end to the final whistle, but the teams could not be separated, due to superb defence and last-ditch diving tags.

Jack Stearman, first-team player and community development officer at the Knights, said: “What a great end to a fantastic tournament.
“Every team that took part on Sunday deserved a place in the final, such was the quality of the event and I cannot thank the teachers enough, who took time out of their weekend to take their teams to this event.”
