THERE was joy and woe for Rawcliffe footballers in York FA cup finals.
The delight was furnished in the Senior Minor Cup Under-16s final, where Rawcliffe beat Fulford United 3-1.
Jordan Spencer broke the deadlock for Rawcliffe who netted at the far post from a Mike Fafera pass.
Both Fafera and Lewis Rhodes went close and then Fulford goalkeeper Sam Pepper made a remarkable triple save to quell the Rawcliffe raids before, early in the second half, Jack Littlechild’s 18-yard shot doubled the advantage.
Hesitant defence allowed Ben Reilly to halve the arrears, but Fafera finished off a flowing team move and Rawcliffe skipper Joe Parnell accepted the trophy from Barry Casterton, assistant secretary of the York FA.
But there was no repeat of that feat for Rawcliffe in the York FA Junior Minor Cup final at Tockwith, where Pocklington Predators prevailed with a 4-0 conquest.
In a blank first half, a long-range wind-assisted blast from Matt Fisher was well saved by Pocklington ’keeper Alex Varley, while Luke Wilkinson twice went close for Rawcliffe in the initial exchanges after half-time.
Just after the hour the Predators seized control when Jamie Harvey scored from close in. Nathan Smith added a second and as Rawcliffe wilted Ryan Gaughan and Harvey again, with a fine header, completed the victory.
The Ted King Cup and medals were presented by York FA referees’ appointment secretary Chris Dale.
