MILITARY history went on show near York over the weekend.

The Yorkshire Air Museum, at Elvington, hosted more than 200 vehicles, including Jeeps, trucks, field artillery and tanks from across the UK as it staged its Battlegroup North And Military Wheels And Wings Show.

One of the star attractions was a Douglas DC3 Dakota, with those attending having the chance to step inside the Second World War aircraft as it went on outdoor display for the first time since being repainted in March.

The event also brought the history of the armed forces to life through re-enactments by a string of groups, including the Normandy Arnhem Society, the Victory in Europe Re-enactment Association and the Pontefract Home Guard, with the Frontline Association and the Northern World War Two Association’s members representing German troops.

Among the highlights of the two-day show was Saturday’s flypast by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, as seen during the recent royal wedding, while wargaming clubs from York, Market Weighton and other parts of Yorkshire and beyond staged a series of competitions and demonstrations.

A museum spokesman said: “The show’s roots lie in the wargaming show and it gives children the chance to get involved in the battles provided by the participation games and learn about this amazing hobby.”
