I COMPLETELY agree with Tom Mitchell about the bombing raid on Gaddafi’s compound (Letters, May 5).
I am only surprised that there has not been a big outcry about this disgraceful episode.
It seems that the royal wedding and the death of Osama bin Laden have conveniently taken over the news.
I cannot imagine how, as members of NATO, we can get away with such an act of aggression against a family home.
What a fury there would be if our Queen or Prime Minister were to be the target of a bombing raid. It would never be forgotten.
Colonel Gaddafi is still the official head of his country and has considerable support and power.
We should confine any action to watching for abuse of human rights or outright offences against civilians. We are now guilty of these ourselves.
Jean Frost, Woodlands Grove, York.
• I AGREE with Tom Mitchell (Letters, May 5) about the killing of civilians in Libya, but he is wrong to say that the UN mandate calls for Gaddafi’s removal. It does not.
It calls for the protection of civilians by all means necessary.
That means that when Gaddafi’s compound was bombed, NATO was killing civilians to protect civilians.
Mr B Emmerson, Charles Street, Selby.
