A GANG of attackers kicked and punched a 27-year-old man outside a York pub, leaving him with head injuries.

The victim was also smashed over the head with a bottle in the assault, described as “vicious” by police, who are now appealing for witnesses.

The attack took place between 11pm and 11.30pm outside The Ainsty pub, at the junction of Boroughbridge Road and Carr Lane, in Acomb, on Friday, April 29, although police only released the information yesterday.

Detectives say the pub was busy at the time as it followed a day long celebration of the royal wedding.

The victim was leaving the pub when a group of men knocked him to the ground.

He managed to stand up, but as he tried to escape, he was again knocked down.

Police say the group of men then kicked and punched him as he lay on the floor.

Following the assault, the man was taken by ambulance to York Hospital where he was treated for head injuries. He has since been released from hospital.

An 18-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the incident. He has been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

Detective Constable Michael Johnston, of York CID, said: “This was a vicious assault which could have had a far more serious outcome.

“I understand that there were a large number of people in the public house at the time, celebrating the royal wedding, and I ask that they come forward as I need to speak to them as soon as possible.”
