STUDENTS from the Universities of York and Lancaster will take part in Europe’s largest inter-university sports tournament, Roses 2011.
The competition, between May 13 and 15, will see students compete for the Carter James Cup, named after Lord James of York and Sir Charles Carter of Lancaster, who created the competition in 1965.
The two teams will pit their skills in sports including rugby, hockey, tennis, archery, judo, clay pigeon shooting and even Frisbee throwing.
Other highlights of the competition include the boat races, which start near Lendal Bridge on Saturday, May 14, and a rugby match at Huntington Stadium on Friday, May 13, which is expected to attract 2,500 people.
Professor Brian Cantor, Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, will be entering the sporting spirit with a friendly croquet match on the lawn outside Heslington Hall against the Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, Professor Paul Wellings.
