I WOULD like to thank the thousands of York voters who supported the Green Party in the local elections, especially Fishergate residents who ensured an increased Green majority and the continued presence of two Green councillors to represent the ward.
Although we were unsuccessful in increasing our number of councillors, we still increased our vote and secured the second largest vote across wards that make up the York Central constituency.
We also secured second place in Micklegate, Clifton and Heslington wards (with a tie for second place in Guildhall).
Across the country, the Green Party had a net gain of 21 seats, retaining the position of main opposition group in Norwich and gaining ten seats in Brighton to become the largest party on the council.
With strong university and local party groups in York, we welcome new supporters as we work hard to hold the new Labour administration to their “green” manifesto pledges.
We will also be pushing forward our agenda of minimising the effect of cuts, developing green jobs and seeking a truly sustainable future for our city.
Coun Andy D’Agorne, Green group leader, Broadway West, York.
