Firefighters had to launch their water rescue unit when a young women jumped into the River Ouse near Queen's Staithe on Friday night.
The woman, believed to be in her early twenties, swam to the centre of the river, which was very low. But bystanders, fearing she was in danger, called police who called firefighters, who made a quick rescue.
Police escorted her to York Hospital but she was not believed to be injured. The incident happened between 9pm and 9.45pm. Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.
