A NATIONAL charity today launched a text messaging service aimed at cutting child abuse in York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire.
The NSPCC has set up a free 24-hour text number on 88858 for use by anyone who is worried about a child.
A recent poll by the charity revealed one in five people in Yorkshire and the Humber were concerned a child was being abused or neglected, and unless a person reported their suspicions at once, there was a one in two chance they never would.
The charity hopes the text message will make it easier for people to report child abuse at once. Messages will be passed to the charity’s helpline, which last year received 880 calls from North Yorkshire.
TV psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos said: “Sending a text is quick and immediate, whether you’re at home or out shopping. It’s good to know you’ve taken action. So if you’re worried about a child, the message is simple. Don’t delay, text the Helpline today.”
