A MAJOR revamp of a Selby village is complete.
The Hemingbrough Village Welcome Project, which was started by councillors in October 2009, has now ended.
The final structure, to include a sign and plants, was completed at the end of April, and was the final part of the project on formerly overgrown land, which saw 20 tonnes of topsoil and stone supplied to the council by Plasmor. Residents of Hemingbrough have also donated bulbs, cuttings, shrubs, seeds and exotic palm plants, and will soon plant a time capsule with local schoolchildren. Hemingbrough Parish council chairman Jan Strelczenie said: “It has been hard work, but it has been well worth it. There have been many good comments.
“People are still contacting us and donating plants, which is great, and proves that residents are interested and that is why we came up with the idea of a time capsule, to involve the children of both villages.”
Coun Roland Chilvers said: “Jan is not the best brick-layer and I would advise him to stay retired, but at least it is sound. We intend to encase the capsule in concrete so it should be safe for more than a hundred years.
“I am of the opinion that youngsters need to be involved in all village events; that way they learn to respect things.”
