York pulled off an amazing turnaround to head division one of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.
Playing at David Lloyd on their fast indoor carpet surface, York lost five of the first six rubbers 7-5.
But York’s Howard Pallister and Andy Cooke squared the match, winning the sixth rubber by a remarkable 11-1. All three York pairs then won their rubbers for a momentous 59-49 victory.
Wigginton got off the mark in their first top-flight match with a tight scrape at home to title-hopefuls Fulford.
But after an early reverse, Fulford came back strongly and had the momentum to win the match, winning the final eight games.
Poppleton 2 head division two led by newcomer Dominic Shread, who shone against his old team Rowntree Park, in tandem with Neil Johnson, to claim the match-winning final rubber 9-3.
Boston Spa suffered a comprehensive defeat at Castlegarth for whom David Woon and Roger Fawcuss were the star players.
The father and son pair of Tim and James Hunt bagged 25 games to help Stamford Bridge to a comfortable 67-41 win at Rufforth to top division three.
Led by Alex Wilkin and Trevor Cook, Knaresborough King James annihilated unhappy Cawood who have already conceded 150 games in two matches.
Wigginton 2 captain Chris Burnham and Matt Waudby starred with 28 as they took the points at Fulford 2. A 25-game haul from Richard Corrigan and Jamie Winspear at Bubwith 2 kept Bishopthorpe in front in division five, where two 29s and a 30 from the three Sutton-on-Derwent 2 pairs accounted for a young Sheriff Hutton side.
A stunning mid-match 12-0 rubber triumph by Jason Whiting and Neil Giltrap saw York 3 nab the points at Starbeck 2, when a home win was the far likelier outcome.
Division six leaders David Lloyd 2 won 63-45 at Cliffe, despite a plucky 24 games from Luke Crowther and Callum Hancox.
York 4ths head division seven after a 60-48 win over Starbeck 3’s youngsters, while a final 9-3 from Lewis Neave and Johnny Kilgallon sealed the points for Stamford Bridge 2 at hosts Bishopthorpe 2.
Wigginton 3rds helped themselves at struggling Selby, to record their club’s first win of the term.
