BARRIERS will be constructed over a city cycle path following warnings that an accident on the route was “inevitable”.

John Gallagher, 32, of Lilbourne Drive, Clifton, said building work on the street to construct new council homes was obstructing drivers’ views of the cycle path.

He said the obstruction caused by a site office meant cars had to pull well into the cycle path before they could see if anyone was approaching.

Mr Gallagher said he was worried for the safety of children and the cyclists.

Now following Mr Gallagher’s most recent complaints, City of York Council has agreed to put up barriers across the path.

Andy Kerr, housing development manager at the council, said: “During the public consultation carried out ahead of the development, it was the strong view of the community that the cycle way and footpath should remain open during the works.

“After the site compound had been erected, Mr Gallagher contacted us to raise concerns about visibility for cyclists and approaching vehicles.

“We immediately met with Mr Gallagher and put measures in place to resolve the problem.

“In addition, we have now also agreed to install staggered cycle barriers for the duration of construction so that cyclists are fully aware of the road crossing.”

Ninteen family homes are being built in Lilbourne Drive – York’s first new council houses in more than 20 years.
