A YORK postmaster is the latest nominee in The Press’s 2011 Community Pride Awards, praised for his patience and unflappable attitude.

Joy Crawshaw, a retired teacher, and her husband, Charles, have nominated their local postmaster, Kenneth Slee, from Heworth, for the Service With A Smile award, for all the help he has given them.

Joy said: “We would like to nominate Mr Slee, postmaster in Heworth, for his helpful and patient service.

“It’s like a school, the head teacher gets all the kudos, but all the workers there are very, very obliging, and when there’s an elderly person at the post office, Kenneth is very patient with them.

“If anyone goes in and wants anything photocopying or enlarging, it’s done with no fuss, and he’s so unflappable, even if there’s a long queue or it’s nearly closing time.”

Kenneth said: “I’m very lucky to be blessed with good staff and loyal customers, and that makes the job a lot easier and keeps the post office viable.

“It’s very nice to be nominated, but I think the staff play a big part really in the service, it wouldn’t happen without them.”

You can make a nomination online before Friday, July 22.

A supporting statement of no more than two sides of A4 should be included with each nomination, and may include a photograph, which we are unable to return.

All nominees must live or be based in the City of York Council tax area, and the winners will be invited to the awards ceremony in October.
