THE Friends of York Walls had a guided tour of a part of the historic structure into which they hope to breathe new life.
City of York Council archaeologist John Oxley showed the not-for-profit organisation around the currently unused Fishergate Postern. The Friends are raising money to lease the building from the council.
Keith Myers, chairman of Friends of York Walls, said the group, which has attracted 160 members since it was formed in January, hoped to raise £35,000 to refurbish Fishergate Postern into a visitor and community centre.
He said: “We do not think the walls have been promoted by anyone to date and we’re anxious to make sure people know what’s on the walls and more about them.”
He said they would be seeking grant and community funding, as well as holding fundraising events, including planning a York Walls Festival, which would feature concerts around the walls, next summer.
