POLICE are warning shoppers in Selby to be vigilant after two elderly women had their handbags stolen in a local supermarket.
The victims, aged 82 and 89, were shopping in Morrisons, in Market Cross, at lunchtime on Saturday, when they were targeted by thieves.
Both women, who were shopping separately, made it to the checkouts before discovering that their bags had been snatched from their trolleys.
Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the thefts to come forward with information and are advising people to take care of their personal belongings when out shopping. PC Stuart Henderson, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “This was an extremely callous crime against two innocent, elderly ladies who were out shopping.
“As the store was very busy at the time, I hoping that someone may have some information that can help us apprehend the offenders and bring them to justice.
“I would also urge anyone who is out shopping to take extra care of their personal belongings and ensure they don’t make life easy for thieves.”
Anyone with information should phone PC Henderson on 0845 6060247.
