THEY do say history repeats itself and none more so having read the article in The Press, May 10 referring to 1940 ‘On This Day’. Neville Chamberlain having resigned as Prime Minister, leaving Winston Churchill to form a coalition government.

Not withstanding the political arena in those times, it would appear, be it in war and in a recession, that coalitions can work for the benefit of the nation, putting politics to one side to achieve victory and a lesson to be learned.

However, if and when our financial situation improves, one has to reflect how fickle and ungrateful the voters are come the next election, including MPs. Brutus will be waiting in the wings to undo any progress made.

When it comes to allegiance to any one party, one must bear in mind that Winston Churchill entered politics as a Liberal before turning the air blue in the rainbow effect within Parliament before losing the post war election to Clement Attlee.
