St John’s made it three wins in a row with a 6-3 home success over RI Mon/Wednesday ‘B’ in ladies division one of the York Badminton League.

Niki Hainsworth and Joy Wong led by example for the campus ranks and were untroubled in taking their three rubbers in straight sets for a total of 126-71.

RI Tues/Thursday ‘B’ suffered two 9-0 defeats in men’s two after visits to York RI Mon/Wednesday ‘A’ and Clifton ‘A’, the division’s two leading lights.

Mark Harris and Ollie Cohen topscored for the Institute with three wins for 126-85, while George Noble and Erik Wagenaars were in great form to take the best Clifton return of 126-56.

Selby/Drax ‘B’ finally got their first win with a 6-3 home beating of a scratch St John’s team.

Adam Harvey and Simon Templeman took all three university wins for a hard fought 144-118, but John Formby and Rex Pocklington ensured the home haul with a 13-21, 21-16, 21-18 success over Matt Alker and Dan Gration.

Selby Jubilee scored a 7-2 win over visitors Shepherds who were a pairing short. The best rubber of the match was the opener in which James Dawson and James Barrett beat Shepherd’s Paul Nichol and James Pearson 21-18, 8-21, 21-18 in a tough match.

RI Mon/Wednesday ‘B’ look to have snatched the title after a 6-3 home win over a gritty Tadcaster team.

Loz Smith and Ben Wheller led the hosts to victory with three straight wins in a total of 128-89, including a 22-20, 21-12 success over Pete Smith and Fraser Clark who claimed two Tadcaster wins.

Clifton ‘C’ played well to record a 7-2 home win over RI Tues/Thursday ‘C’ which almost ensures promotion to the top flightnext season.

Colin Farrell and Matt Knight were in tremendous form for the promotion hopefuls with three straight wins for 126-76, including a 16 and 11 triumph over Ian Sinker and Brian Morley who took both visitors’ wins.

Clifton ‘B’ continued their good form with a 7-2 win at Riverside ‘A’ in mixed one.

Richard McIntosh and Lucy Smith were outstanding for the visitors with three wins for 150-118, which included a rare 21-18, 30-29 triumph over Craig Dobson and Trish Fowler.

Huntington ‘A’ hit top form in mixed three with an 8-1 home win over Selby/Drax ‘B’, followed by a same-score success away to the same team and then they notched a 6-3 home win over a strong Nestle Rowntree team to take a three-match total of 28 points from a possible 33.

Mark Barker and Angela Hobman played well to take eight wins from nine rubbers for a three-match haul of 388-280.

Joan Emmerson and Jeff Whittaker played well for the confectionery team to take all three rubbers for a return of 143-123.

Fulfordgate ‘A’ made sure of a winner-take-all duel with Huntington ‘A’ for the mixed three title after they overwhelmed Tadcaster ‘B’ 7-2 margin at the Mount School.

Mat Hobman and Hazel Winfield proved their worth with three straight wins for 126-57, while Steve Walker and Zoe Cook also were unbeaten for 126-70.
