IT’S party time at York Explore Library Learning Centre, which marks its first birthday this weekend with an exciting line-up of events.

Highlights of the three-day programme include creative writing workshops, a gardeners’ question time session, and a visit by popular author Freya North.

Explore, which was created from the former central library, has proved a tremendous success since it opened in May last year. It has undergone a major revamp, which saw the creation of a stylish and modern café and an extensive makeover of the old lending library areas.

On Saturday, visitors will be able to share their memories of York’s libraries, get help with using computers and even find out how to create their own website.

There will also be a guided local history health walk through Hungate and a chance to chat to volunteers from Aviva about their Learn And Thrive courses which offer support with household financial planning.

Children have not been forgotten – there will be children’s games and storytelling, a chance to help create a time capsule for the future, and a local history quiz.

Similar events will take place on Sunday, with the addition of a creative writing taster session with writer Lizzie Linklater, who will give advice on how to unlock the author within.

On Tuesday, May 24, there will be a photography workshop, craft session, and a performance by the City of York Council staff choir. The celebrations close on Tuesday evening with the chance to meet author Freya North, who will also be signing copies of her new book, Chances.

All events are free, but places must be reserved for some events by phoning York Explore on 01904 552828 or emailing exploreyork@york.gov.uk For more details go to york.gov.uk/libraries
