IT IS sad to learn there is criticism regarding the use of the Lord Mayor’s annual hospitality budget (The Press, May 18).
When will this great city realise that its history is its greatest asset? We are the only city with a Lord Mayor (mayors from c1213), a sheriff and an archbishop. We have a civic sword given by Richard II in 1387, a foundation predating 71AD and being the city of which King George VI said, “The History of York is the history of England.”
We should make much more of our civic history and pageantry. For the increase of tourist revenue alone, it would be worth it, but also it is our duty not to disregard our heritage.
The celebration at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall gives the opportunity for a longer procession along Parliament Street and for more people to witness such a vital part of the city’s continuing history.
