THE main opposition party on City of York Council have unveiled their top team following this month’s local elections.
Rural West York councillor Ian Gillies has been re-elected as leader of the authority’s Conservative group after it won three more seats at the May 5 poll, taking the Tory tally on the Labour-led council to ten.
Coun Joe Watt will be the Conservatives’ city strategy spokesman, with other roles within the group going to Coun Jenny Brooks (children and young people’s services), Coun Sian Wiseman (health and social services), Coun John Galvin (neighbourhood services) and Coun Paul Healey (community safety).
Coun Gillies said: “For the past four years, we have been the power-brokers in a council with no overall control, a job we did very effectively.
“We’ve now come out of the elections a stronger, more experienced team, with an increase in members, ready to perform the role of official opposition to Labour. We’re ready for this challenge and look forward to it. We intend to hold Labour responsible for their actions and their whole approach to governing York.”
