A dramatic conclusion graced the Shepherds cup final, the feature knockout event in the CE Electric York and District Table Tennis season.
There was a father and son on each side, Martin and Ethan Lowe for Coneysthorpe ‘A’, and Peter and Julian Taylor, for Sessions ‘B’.
The match came down to the final set, and Coneysthorpe ‘A’ ace Ian Stansfield just edged out Sessions ‘B’ maistay Peter Taylor, 42-41 in a tense conclusion, to complete a remarkable double for Coneysthorpe ‘A’, already winners of the division one title.
The Machell Trophy was also keenly contested, division two champions York RI ‘E’ taking on Coneysthorpe ‘B’, as the Ryedale outfit looked to complete a clean sweep of the major titles.
York RI ‘E’ swept into a 4-1 lead, but the pressure mounted as Coneysthorpe ‘B’ pegged it back to 4-3.
However, the talented Pole, Filip Wojtkowiak, in his debut season in the League, produced an excellent performance to overcome Keith Wilkinson, who also plays in Hull’s Premier Division, 45-34, to complete a 5-3 success and ensure a terrific double for the Railway Institute team.
Wojtkowiak was outstanding, winning all his three games.
