OLYMPIC champion Jonathan Edwards is to visit an East Yorkshire college as the countdown to the London 2012 Games gets under way.
The former athlete, who won triple-jump gold at the Sydney Olympics 11 years ago and set the current world record for the event in 1995, will look around the regional training centre for Britain’s pentathlon competitors at Bishop Burton College next Wednesday.
He will meet young athletes and schoolchildren who will be taking part in a pentathlon training session, and trying his hand at riding, shooting and fencing.
The visit, organised by Yorkshire Gold, the regional delivery partner for next year’s Olympics, will also see him visit a London 2012-inspired family sport day at Woodford Sports Centre in Hull and take part in a question-and-answer session with local youngsters.
The Olympic torch will arrive in York on Tuesday, June 19, next year as it is carried around the UK, with Selby and Tadcaster possibly also being included along its route.
