DERBY delight went the way of Heworth ARLC Under-9s when they went to White Rose Avenue to take on New Earswick All Blacks U9s.
Heworth provided a powerful display to take the plaudits, despite some gritty performances for the All Blacks outfit.
Villagers youngster Kian Oliver hit his old club hard, scoring four tries and taking the man-of-the-match award.
Heworth’s defence was also excellent, restricting the All Blacks to three tries, with top tackler Jak Ostergaard, the opposition’s choice of man of the match, leading the way.
Jensen Brown was deemed Heworth’s most improved player, and Luke Prenty, who scored two tries, picked up their ‘magic moment’ award.
Ryan Kendra was All Blacks’ man of the match and top tackler after a fine display.
William Harrison took their ‘rising star’ award after scoring his first try of the season in just his third game, while Joshua Walton and Lewis Young also bagged tries.
Ellie Harrison was All Blacks’ girl of the game, while their ‘magic moment’ was Joshua Kelly’s try-saving tackle.
Heworth U11s avenged one of their few defeats this season as they dispatched Dewsbury Celtic 36-6 at Elm Park Way.
The Villagers had thrown away an 18-point lead to lose by two points in the reverse encounter, but this time their pace, power and ball skills were too much for the away side as they scored eight tries and only conceded one, thanks to a defence which was again magnificent.
Six different players scored tries for Heworth – Tom Kilgar (2), Jake Wright (2) and Jimmy Pigott (2), Leon Beattie, Harry Sheppeard and Jamie Morrison – the latter with his first-ever try after breaking the defensive line and galloping 60 metres.
The scoreline could have been greater as the Villagers only added two conversions, through the excellent Wright and Pigott.
Jamie Morrison stood out, while half-backs Shay North and Sam Young were instrumental throughout and set up several tries, North also topping the tackle count.
His brother, Cain, though, was the man of the match as he ran hard and defended superbly against a much bigger pack.
Heworth U8s put in a great second-half display to edge out a tough, speedy Castleford Lock Lane team in an exciting game.
Trailing by one try at the break, Heworth stepped up a gear to score through Kane Cavanagh, adding to his powerhouse try in the first period, Leon Mooring, Callum Rutland and Jack Young with a long-distance effort.
The ever-improving Jay Richards was man of the match, while Cavanagh took the ‘magic moment’ award for his powerful display. Spencer Harris, who made some strong individual tackles, also stood out.
Hat-trick man Robbie Gibb Kirk was man of the match as New Earswick U8s met Dudley Hill. Travis Dale was the most improved and Matty Hotchins took the magic moment award for his try, while Jonathan Eldors was the ‘rising star’.
A small piece of history was being made today as Northallerton Broncos juniors play their first game of rugby league.
The summer club’s under-14s team were travelling to take on Jarrow Vikings in the North East Junior League.
Jarrow are also a new junior team – and, like Northallerton, provide a boost to the growth of grassroots rugby league outside of the sport’s heartlands.
Northallerton U14s train at Colburn Sports Centre on Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm. New players of any ability and experience are welcome. For information, phone Joy Carter on 07982 719495.
