A GROUP inspired by a woman’s fight against cancer plan to raise thousands of pounds for research into the illness.
The band of women, who call themselves the Minster Belles, plan to take part in Moonwalk, a midnight half-marathon walk in Edinburgh next month, with an initial target of £7,500.
The 11-strong group, made up of residents from Acomb, Copmanthorpe and Rufforth, is led by Jo Todd, 38, of Copmanthorpe, who has already raised nearly £1,500 for two cancer charities after losing three members of her family to the disease in the same year.
Jo said her friend Nic Carslaw, 42, a senior lecturer at the University of York and a mother of two from Copmanthorpe, was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in January.
Within two weeks, she underwent surgery to remove the tumour and was currently completing a chemotherapy course.
Jo said: “My experience of cancer through three family members and a number of close friends is that treatment is important, but a positive approach is vital.
“I’m convinced the ability to remain positive against the odds helps women get through breast cancer. Nic’s attitude has been an inspiration to us all.”
Each Belle has adopted a name associated with their character. For example, Nic, an environment lecturer, is “Biodegrada-belle”, while Jo has been dubbed Socia-belle.
Jo said Nic would be unable to join the Belles in Edinburgh due to her continuing treatment, but was committed to completing a 13.1-mile cycle ride from Copmanthorpe village on the same day as the Moon Walk, June 11.
