A TRIO of maths teachers from Tadcaster Grammar School are the latest competitors to sign up for a men’s only fun run in York next month.
Geoff Wilson, John Alderman and Stephen Pearson are urging other men to sign up and join them for the R U Talking The P...2? event, on Father’s Day, June 19, to raise money for male- specific cancers.
Mr Wilson, 60, said: “John and I did it last year and we have persuaded another colleague to do it with us this time.
“My wife has done Race for Life on three or four occasions and I had been to support her and saw the feel-good factor which existed there. When it was mentioned at school that there was one for the guys I thought that was the right thing to do.
“The organisers have put a lot of time and effort in to it and they deserve our support.”
The event, in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research’s University of York laboratory, raised £12,000 last year and has again been organised by South Bank hairdresser Brian Hughes, 57, and his friend Richard Smith, members of Knavesmire Harriers running club.
Mr Hughes said: “Even if people just want to come down with their dads, granddads, and sons and walk the route on the day then that’s absolutely fine.
“The route passes many interesting York sites, including the famous Clifford’s Tower, which is the place where Henry VIII had the bodies of his enemies put on public display.
“We won’t be doing anything like that on the day but we will be encouraging people to have a good time as well as highlighting the fact that lads are still falling way behind women when it comes to being able to attend their own cancer-related awareness events like this.”
Details and entry forms are at yorkknavesmireharriers.co.uk, from Up and Running in Fossgate, Sweatshop at David Lloyds Centre in Hull Road, York, or phone Mr Hughes on 01904 656427 and leave your details.
