IT WAS sad to read the thoughts of Coun Sue Galloway on the expensive enrolment of the new Lord Mayor (The Press, May 21).

I would have thought by now she would have realised how important the role of Lord Mayor was to the city of York. It is a major part of the history of York, just as the Minster and the Vikings are.

Tourists will view the parade and take many photos which will be shown around the world, and each one will advertise the city and its history.

I, like many other Lord Mayors before, took the position to other parts of the world (at no expense to the residents) to advertise this city and its history.

It must be remembered that tourists come to see the Lord Mayor not the holder of the position in their grey suits or pink cardigans.

Sadly, some seem to have taken the role as just a fundraising priority for charities. It’s not that at all; it’s about raising the profile of this city, nationally and internationally, and the enrolment and reception are part of the greater scheme of things. Long may it continue.
