STORMING finishes to both halves of his second round put York-born Simon Dyson into a challenging position in the lucrative BMW PGA Championship.

On a day when many of the world’s leading players toiled to master the conditions at Wentworth, the 33-year-old Dyson provided a master-class that gave him a three-under-par 68 and joint seventh place heading into today’s third round.

He was just three shots off the lead held jointly by world number two Luke Donald and Spain’s Alvaro Quiros, who were on six-under.

Donald, a long-time friend of Dyson, laboured to a one-over 72 yesterday, but there was no such discomfort for the Malton & Norton GC star.

He opened with a birdie on the par-five fourth and repeated stirring form with shots gained on the seventh and eighth holes.

Dropped shots then followed on the ninth and the 12th – he had bogied the latter on the first day.

But again the world-ranked number 88 came strong.

Dyson birdied the shortest hole - the 179-yard par-three 14th - and then matched his birdie of the opening round when he again carded a four on the par-five 610-yard 17th.

Harrogate GC’s John Parry was in less spectacular form, but his second successive level-par round put him in a healthy state tied for 20th position.
