ROGER Westmoreland is 100 per cent correct with his observations about the conflict in Libya being just another form of imperialism (Letters, May 21.

Strangely, oil-less Syria, with its daily assaults on its civilians, hasn’t resulted in even a hot-air balloon being dispatched from the West to go to their aid, let alone the myriad £1,000,000-a-time Cruise missiles the civilians of Libya appear to need to “defend” them.

Why are most people in this country not more interested in these hugely expensive, imperialistic-type conflicts – and demanding they be halted immediately?

I suspect it’s sheer indifference. Sadly, it’s only the Victor Meldrews of this world, such as Mr Westmoreland and myself, who get enraged enough to put (metaphorical) pen to paper and hope to spark similar outrage in others.

Mr Westmoreland’s penultimate paragraph states: “The real aims of NATO are to remove a major obstacle to the recolonisation of Africa and one more dissenting voice from OPEC.”

I would agree on his OPEC comment but not on his somewhat radical idea about “the recolonisation of Africa”.

That, I feel, would be a step too far.
