A Selby cancer sufferer is embarking on a five-day sponsored walk, only days after starting chemotherapy treatment for the second time in two years.

Jean Gratton, 61, of Burn, near Selby, was treated for ovarian cancer two years ago and was given the all-clear months later.

She was so impressed with the work of doctors and nurses at St James’s Hospital, Leeds, she immediately started raising money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

She has so far raised more than £1,000 from plant sales, raffles and party events, and months ago began planning a coastal walk from Saltburn to Filey, starting on June 13.

But a few weeks ago she was told the cancer had returned and she will begin a new treatment of chemotherapy days before the trek.

She and seven relatives and friends are still going ahead with the walk despite her condition.

“I am obviously quite frightened at the news but I am determined to do as much of the walk as I can. It is a very good cause and I am not backing out,” said Jean.

She has the backing and good wishes of actress Jean Alexander (Coronation Street’s Hilda Ogden) who is honorary Mayoress of Burn, where she has relatives. Miss Alexander, who has given a generous sponsorship for the walk, said: “I am proud of Jean Gratton for her determination in going ahead with the walk. Cancer touches so many people and the money she raises is going to a very important cause.”

It is hoped the actress will be there to greet the hikers when they arrive in Filey on June 18.

Selby Railway Sports & Social Club is staging a raffle to help boost Jean Gratton’s fund and she has had large donations from the Kier Group, her husband’s former employers, as well as other businesses.

A collection in The Wheatsheaf pub at Burn raised more than £150.

“I am hoping we can get several thousand pounds once all the sponsorships and donations are in. People have been so generous,” said Jean.

Anyone wanting to donate cash or sponsor the walkers can phone Jean or George Gratton on 07867 774 911.
